I work to the BACP Ethical Framework and to the Code of Ethics of my professional organisation - GPTI, the Gestalt Psychotherapy & Training Institute.
Confidentiality is taken very seriously and is at the core of building a trusting therapeutic relationship.
Confidentiality means that what you say is not discussed or revealed to others.
There are certain situations where a therapist may talk about your situation. These are :
- During the course of confidential supervision with a peer or professional supervisor in order to have consultancy about the work.
- If there is a risk of serious harm to self or others and when further support is required, eg contact with a doctor.
- When there are legal restrictions on confidentiality in situations involving the threat of terrorism or child abuse.
In almost all cases, confidentiality is only broken after discussion with the client in order to respect their autonomy.
If you have any questions about this, please contact me to discuss it further.
